Retrospective Experiences of First-Episode Psychosis Treatment Under Open Dialogue-Based Services: A Qualitative Study.

2021

AbstractOpen Dialogue (OD) is an integrated approach to mental health care, which has demonstrated promising outcomes in the treatment of first-episode psychosis (FEP) in Finnish Western Lapland region. However, little is known how treatment under OD is retrospectively experienced by the service users themselves. To address this, twenty participants from the original Western Lapland research cohort diagnosed with psychosis (F20–F29) were asked about their treatment of FEP, initiated under OD 10–23 years previously. Thematic analysis was used to explore how the treatment was experienced. Most participants viewed network treatment meetings as an important part of their treatment, as they enab…

Player performance, satisfaction, and video game enjoyment

2009

An experiment (N = 74) was conducted to investigate the impact of game difficulty and player performance on game enjoyment. Participants played a First Person Shooter game with systematically varied levels of difficulty. Satisfaction with performance and game enjoyment were assessed after playing. Results are not fully in line with predictions derived from flow and attribution theory and suggest players to (1) change their view on their own performance with its implications for enjoyment with increasing game experience and (2) to switch strategically between different sources of fun, thus maintaining a (somewhat) positive experience even when performance-based enjoyment is low.

The exceptional nature of the first person in natural story processing and the transfer of egocentricity

2018

Human language enables us to externalise self-internal information (e.g. emotions or beliefs that are not readily accessible to others). Thus, language bridges the gap between the self and the other (e.g. Frith and Frith, 2010) in a way that possibly no other communication system can provide. In many languages, the difference between the self and others is directly reflected in the distinction between first (“I”), second (“you”) and third person (“he, she”) marking. In the present study, we compared ERPs to first, second and third person pronouns during the comprehension of an audio-book version of The Little Prince. Our results revealed a strong P300 response following first person pronoun…

Fingimientos y atenuación en el uso de "creo"

2018

The article analyses the development of attenuation functions in different uses of creo in colloquial conversations. This propositional attitude verb, the most polysemic and polyfunctional one in its category, has been traditionally considered an attenuating device because it can be used by speakers to convey distancing from their message. However, the fact that it is a subjectifier in its first person form could be understood as a contradiction with its function being primarily attenuating. This paper explores the semantic and pragmatic values of the different uses of creo in order to determine what triggers attenuation. 215 examples from two conversational corpora, VAL.ES.CO. 2002 and VAL…

Adaptive Multi-agent System Based on Wasp-Like Behaviour for the Virtual Learning Game Sotirios

2018

The aim of this paper is to propose a model for an adaptive multi-agent system based on wasp-like behaviour for dynamic allocation of puzzles and quests in the virtual learning game SOTIRIOS. This is a digital learning game integrated inside a First Person Shooter designed by the second author of this paper. The learning process is based on many puzzles hidden in the game flow. The multi-agent system is necessary to integrate a multiplayer mode into the game. The agents use wasp task allocation behaviour, combined with a model of wasp dominance hierarchy in order to create a unique multiplayer learning system, where each user has a different learning curve, based on his results. The wasp be…

First-Person Authority and Self-Knowledge as an Achievement

2010

There is much that I admire in Richard Moran’s account of how firstperson authority may be consistent with self-knowledge as an achievement. In this paper, I examine his attempt to characterize the goal of psychoanalytic treatment, which is surely that the patient should go beyond the mere theoretical acceptance of the analyst’s interpretation, and requires instead a more intimate, first-personal, awareness by the patient of their psychological condition. I object, however, that the way in which Moran distinguishes between the deliberative and the theoretical attitudes is ultimately inconsistent with a satisfactory account of psychoanalytic practice; mainly because, despite Moran’s claims t…

Peilikäs raanu as a mirror

2005

Helena Lonkila works as a researcher-conservator at the Kainuu Museum. This article is based on the thesis of the same name that the author wrote for her master’s degree. She is thus the first person in Finland to have an MA with museology as the main subject. The paper was published by the Department of Art and Culture Studies, University of Jyväskylä, Culture, Science and Technology Master’s Programme and the Kainuu Museum in January 2005. The publication is available in Finnish at http://www.kajaani.fi/kainuunmuseo.
